The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) is a questionnaire used to assess a person’s average sleepiness level during the day. It involves rating your likelihood of dozing off in eight different situations using a 4-point scale. A higher score indicates a greater tendency to feel sleepy during the day, potentially suggesting a sleep disorder. The OSA50 questionnaire is a screening tool used to assess the risk of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in individuals. It’s a short, four-item questionnaire designed to identify those who might benefit from further evaluation for OSA, such as a sleep study. These two questionnaires appear on Sleep WA’s referral form and must be completed by the patient before a consultation or test is booked.
The STOPBANG questionnaire was developed by University of Toronto Anaesthesiologist, Dr F. Chung. It is also a method of assessing whether an individual has a low or high risk of OSA and is an accepted alternative score in the referral process.
